We have many grand doggies in our family. Our youngest daughter Alana and her fiancé, Zach recently rescued miss Daisy, our newest grand doggie. Miss Daisy went from being abandoned on the roadside to being arguably one of the most pampered pooches in the animal kingdom.
While I had never made dog treats, I figured this would be a fun new quest and I knew Daisy would let me know in short order if the treats were up to her pampered pallet.
Peanut butter is the main star here and I already knew Daisy's penchant for peanut butter. I figured using the smooth nut butter as my base gave me a fighting chance on pleasing this pooch.
Another great ingredient , brown rice flour, is gluten free and I always have it on hand to make muffins as it pairs perfectly with almond flour. It lights up the dense almond flour, making it the perfect combo for my muffins. A great 50/50 flour blend. Rice flour also works well as a coating, making whatever you want to crisp up texturally fabulous and also without gluten.
Finally doggie sprinkles, also known as flaxseed. Flax seed dusts the tops of these treats. Flax has omega fatty acids which is good for dogs and lends to a shiny coat.
The dough is so simple to put together. I had a dog bone cookie cutter, so of course wanted to use that for these treats, but any shape will do. I doubt your canine companion will mind if they're not in the traditional dog bone shape.
Would love to see pics of your pooch chowing down on these peanut butter treats. I was pleased that Daisy approved whole heartedly.
Some of my favorite affiliate items used in this recipe.
Pyrex mixing bowls are indispensable and used in my kitchen on a weekly basis. Really good baking sheets make all the difference. I love NordicWare. Parchment paper makes life easier. I use these nearly every day. Peanut Butter Dog Treats Makes about 1 dozen dog treats 1 cup natural, unsweetened smoothpeanut butter 1 cup brown rice or rice flour (or whole wheat flour), plus extra for dusting the work surface 1 egg 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal Water (you may need up to 1/2 cup depending on your finished dough) Cookie cutter (the dog bone is cute & totally appropriate, but any cookie cutter will do) Preheat oven to 350 degrees In a medium bowl combine peanut butter, flour and egg. Mix well with a spoon. Gradually add water a tablespoon at a time until the dough comes together and can be formed into a disk. The dough consistency depends upon the flour you use and type or brand of peanut butter, hence the water addition. On a floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out desired shapes and transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Don't worry if the dough cracks. It's really easy to press back together. Sprinkle with the flaxseed and press in gently to ensure the flax sticks to the cutouts. Bake at 350 for about 15-20 minutes. Let cool completely before letting your pooch have a taste. They will store well in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Doggie deliciousness.
