If you've spent any time scrolling social media lately, you've probably seen the Viral Dot Cake taking over feeds everywhere. With their colorful nonpareil-covered tops and satisfying "spoon crack" effect , they quickly went viral and have been recreated so many time, including my take on them here.
They’re fun, beautiful, and surprisingly simple to make.

The viral Dot Cake trend is generally credited to The Dotcakes, a New York family-owned bakery founded by Alex Posner. According to multiple reports, Posner began making the cakes around 2017, and the business launched in 2019. The cakes exploded in popularity in 2026 after TikTok and Instagram videos featuring that sprinkle covered tops caught the eye of millions of viewers.

I decided to put my own spin on the trend by making it gluten-free and swapping the traditional icing for a lighter topping: non-hydrogenated CocoWhip (Cool Whip’s angelic cousin).

Using a gluten-free vanilla cake mix made the process incredibly easy while still delivering a soft, moist cake. The colorful nonpareils makes this cake so eye-catching and playful.

One of the things I love most about this version is how accessible it is. Whether you're avoiding gluten or simply looking for a lighter alternative to traditional frosting, this adaptation proves you don't have to sacrifice flavor or fun.
The Viral Dot Cake trend is all about creativity, and that's what makes it so enjoyable. You can customize the colors for birthdays, holidays, baby showers, or any special occasion. And with simple ingredient swaps, it's easy to make the recipe work for your family's preferences and dietary needs.

I TRIED SOME SMALLER ONES TOO
If you haven't tried the Viral Dot Cake yet, consider this your sign. My gluten-free version with CocoWhip was a huge hit, and I'll definitely be making it again.
Let me know how you make this your own!!!

DOT CAKES

Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 box gluten-free vanilla cake mix or mix cake of your choice
  • Ingredients called for on the cake mix package (typically eggs, oil, and water)
For the Topping
  • Sprinkles, sprinkles & more sprinkles a/k/a traditional multi-colored nonpareils
  • 1 tub Coco-Whip nondairy whipped topping (or your favorite whipped topping or icing)
Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cake
  • Prepare and bake the cake according to package instructions on a square or rectangular pan.  Let cool completely before using.

Step 2: Assemble
  1. Use a small short glass, cup or champagne coupe to cut circles out of the cake, pushing to ensure the cake is firmly toward the bottom of the glass and leaving roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch space at the top.
  2. Dollop with Coco-Whip to totally fill and cover, then use an offset spatula to level off so you have a nice flat top.
  3. Pour an abundance of nonpareils into a shallow bowl or pan wide enough to fit your glasses
  4. Dip the top of the cakes into the nonpareils and remove.  The top should be totally covered with bright colored sprinkles.
Notes
  • Keep the CocoWhip chilled until you're ready to use it.
  • Refrigerate leftovers due to the whipped topping.
  • This cake is perfect for birthdays, baby showers, holidays, or any celebration that could use a little extra color.
