There is nothing cozier this time of year than a mug of hot chocolate. While I typically go for the pure cocoa variety homemade hot chocolate, I wanted to do something a bit different this season and in an ode to Elvis….no specific reason but listening to old classic Christmas Music, I wanted to do something with a Blue Christmas theme.
I happened to have Butterfly Pea Powder on hand that I purchased for another recipe after hearing about it from my daughter, Alana. While you may not have this trendy product on hand (most people wouldn’t) it is a gorgeous periwinkle color, reminding me of the periwinkle Crayola crayon from the large assorted box of crayons. Periwinkle is one of my favorite colors and to have a brilliantly colored powder of that color just brings a smile to my face.
Butterfly pea powder is made from the flowering butterfly pea plant which is found in southeast Asia and has a gorgeously vibrant blue hued bloom. The taste is a bit earthy, similar to the taste of green tea, but I specifically use it minimally as a coloring agent, favoring natural colorants over artificial food colorings.
You can make this comforting drink with our without the butterfly pea powder, no worries. Just imagine yourself curled by the fire, watching a gentle snow falling outside your window and sipping this warm, luxurious beverage. We don’t get much snow opportunity here in Georgia, but I certainly like to imagine it as I sip away. Blue Christmas White Hot Chocolate Makes 2 large servings 2 cups full fat coconut milk 1/2 cup chopped white chocolate or melting wafers (such as Ghirardelli) 1 teaspoon vanilla (I used vanilla powder so as not to darken the mixture, but use what you have) 1 teaspoon Butterfly Pea Powder, optional (found online or on our SHOP page) or a couple drops of blue food coloring if you want to use that instead Marshmallows (optional) Crushed peppermint candies (optional) Warm coconut milk in a medium sized pot (this clear one is the coolest to show off the blue color) over low heat until just starting to steam. Stir in white chocolate, vanilla and butterfly pea powder or blue food coloring (if using). Whisk to ensure the butterfly pea powder is thoroughly incorporated and no clumps remain. Spoon into 2 mugs and adorn with marshmallows and peppermint sprinkles if you like. Clear mugs really show off the color.
