This is a super simple, few ingredient twist on a blood orange martini. My version adds a touch of vanilla for that extra special note, and is then topped off with tonic water to lend some fizzy effervescence.
I used Zevia tonic water which I love as a no sugar added tonic water that is sweetened slightly with Stevia, my no-calorie natural sweetener of choice. I find this drink quite refreshing with the zingy blood orange juice and it is simply pretty to look at. Blood oranges are seasonal so if you have to use a navel or cara cara orange, you can certainly do so, you just won’t get that vivid deep pink hue that is indicative of a blood orange. If you leave out the vodka, this makes a mean mocktail and with that blood orange juice, a hefty dose of vitamin C is present. So can we say this is nearly a health drink? Salut!
Blood Orange Vanilla Fizzitini
Serves 2 Juice and some zest (for rimming)nof 3-4 blood oranges (to make approx. 1 cup) 2 tablespoons course sugar such as organic cane sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2-4 ounces vodka, chilled is preferable Tonic water to top off your glasses (I used Zevia) I start by peeling 2 strips off of a blood orange for garnish. Next zest one of the oranges and then squeeze the juice from the oranges into a glass measuring pitcher. Add the vanilla to the juice and stir. Combine the sugar and blood orange zest in a small plate. If you have time to let the zest dry out a bit (an hour or so), it will combine much easier, but you can use it fresh as well. Wet the rim of your glasses just a bit with a bit of the blood orange and then dip into the sugar mixture to coat the rim of the glass, This is an optional step, but looks so cute. In a cocktail shaker that has ice in it, pour in the blood orange juice vanilla mixture, vodka and give it a good shake. Pour into the rimmed glasses then garnish with one of the orange strips. Salut!
