These miraculously crispy margarita flavored angel food cake bites are golden and crunchy on the exterior and as moist and spongy on the interior as you would expect an angel food cake to be. They are simply divine. The lime honey yogurt dipping sauce is the perfect dipper for the bites, and just the most fun little dessert tidbits that you will experience and store bought angel food cake becomes even more heavenly.
Having a bottle of Jose Cuervo margarita mix in my refrigerator for about 150 years prompted me to finally figure out a way to use it. I am not a fan of pre-made margarita mix as they are typically quite sweet so I have no clue how that bottle actually got into our home, but was determined to put it to use at some point and knew it definitely wouldn't be in a margarita.
I came across the concept of fried angel food cake bites on the internet and thought "Wow, I can definitely put that cocktail mix to use" and something quite unique was the result.
The recipe is a very easy. All you need to do is cut a store-bought angel food cake up into cubes, give it a dunk in the margarita mix then let your air fryer do the work.
I have a Ninja Foodi (available on my SHOP page) that I love to use and on my air fryer setting it took about 9 minutes at the 390° mark. Each air fryer will be a bit different so I recommend keeping a close eye on your angel food cake bites so they don't burn.
Mixing a little yogurt (I used coconut milk yogurt) lime zest and honey made the perfect dipper for the cake bites. The flavors just melded so incredibly well and all combined was a very happy result.
I did have some leftover cake bites, covered them with plastic wrap and found out that the next day they had lost their crisp texture so make just enough to be able to eat them while they are at their crispiest, crunchiest best. You won't be disappointed.
This dessert is not only creative and whimsical, but being that I am using store-bought angel food cake and a bottled margarita mix, it comes together quite quickly. My margarita mix had no alcohol in it so this is also perfect for kids. I hope you enjoy these as much as we did.
Air Fryer Margarita Angel Food Cake Bites
with Yogurt Honey Lime Dipping Sauce One loaf angel food cake (I used a loaf, but if you use the typical bundt, you may not need the entire cake.) 2-3 cups margarita mix Cut angel food cake into large cubes, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Pour the margarita mix into a bowl and lightly dip each angel food cake cube in to the margarita mix then place on a separate plate or directly into the air fryer basket. In my Ninja Foodi, these cooked to crispy perfection at 390 for 8-9 minutes. Your air fryer may be different so check them after 5 minutes to make sure they're not burning. Serve with the yogurt honey lime dipping sauce. Yogurt Honey Lime Dipping Sauce 1/2 cup yogurt (I used coconut milk yogurt) Zest of 1 lime 1 tablespoon honey Mix together well.
